Sewer Backup Prevention

To prevent sewer backups, homeowners should never flush anything but toilet paper and human waste, avoid putting grease and food scraps down drains, have trees and shrubs planted away from sewer lines, and consider installing a backflow prevention valve.

What you can do to prevent sewer backups:

● Be mindful of drains: Only flush toilet paper and human waste.

Never pour grease down the drain: Let cooking grease and oils cool, then dispose of them in the trash.

Do not flush wipes: “Flushable” wipes, disposable diapers, sanitary napkins, feminine hygiene products, rubber or latex products, and paper towels can clog pipes and should be put in the trash.

Watch for slow drains: If you notice a sink, toilet, or bathtub is draining slowly, this could be a sign of a blockage that could lead to a backup.

Install a backflow prevention valve: A qualified plumber can install a backwater prevention valve in your plumbing to prevent sewer backflow from entering your home.

Be aware of trees and shrubs: Plant trees and shrubs away from sewer lines to prevent roots from invading and breaking pipes.

Check plumbing vents: Ensure the plumbing vent pipe on your roof is clear of obstructions like bird nests, as a blockage can also contribute to backups

Grease Traps: Restaurant and building owners should have grease traps that are properly designed, installed and regularly maintained. Oil and grease must be disposed of into an approved container for proper disposal. Do not flush oil and grease down the sewer with hot water.

Insurance: Your current homeowners’ policy may not cover sewer back-up losses.  We suggest you contact your insurance agent for details.
